The 18-49 demographic rating is recorded by the popular company Neilsen. The 18-49 demographic is important because thats what determines how much a show will make in ad revenue. So less ad revenue=less likely renewal. Here are the ratings for Smash:
February 6th - 3.8 {Series Premiere}
February 13th - 2.8
February 20th - 2.3
February 27th - 2.3
March 5th - 2.7
So Smash's average is 2.78 in the 18-49 demographic. NBC's average is around 1.7 and wont take lower than a 1.5.
So right now, Smash is almost definitely going to be renewed and get a second season.
